Description

The Samuel Stanhope Smith Lectures, 1805-1811, contains three books documenting the lectures given by Samuel Stanhope Smith in 1806 while at Princeton University. The lectures are on moral philosophy and moral theology. Not included in the collection is information about Hampden Sydney College or Princeton University.
Samuel Stanhope Smith was born March 15, 1751 in Pennsylvania. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton University) and studied theology and philosophy under John Witherspoon. He was a Presbyterian minister and the founding president of Hampden-Sydney College (1775-1879). He then went on to teach and eventually became the 7th president of the College of New Jersey (1795-1812) until he was forced to resign. Smith died on August 21, 1819 in New Jersey.

Creator

While there is reason and cause to believe that these books were transcribed by John Croes, Jr., a student at the College of New Jersey (graduated 1806), we are not able to confirm this. They are the lectures of Samuel Stanhope Smith and were used by various students year after year beginning in 1806. Whether the books were dictated by Samuel Stanhope Smith and transcribed word for word by John, or were class notes taken by John following the lectures, remains unconfirmed and should be taken into consideration when utilizing these resources.
